BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in meters)². Under the WHO categories, 18.5–24.9 is a healthy weight, 25–29.9 overweight and 30 or more obesity.
How it's calculated
Weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. Example: 84 kg at 1.72 m → 84 ÷ 2.96 = 28.4, which is overweight. The healthy range at that height is 54.7–73.7 kg (121–162 lb).
Limits
BMI doesn't tell muscle from fat, so athletes can read as "overweight". It isn't used for children and teens (they have age charts) or during pregnancy. Waist size is a useful second measure.
